1394 WHITE PAPERS

Home Entertainment Networks and Flying Cars

Today’s entertainment networks are reminiscent of the flying cars we have been promised for years but only see in magazines or demonstrations. They are typically cobbled together from parts that require professionals to assemble and maintain, are expensive, and both have a tendency to crash when operated by someone with inadequate training. This white paper provides an in-depth look at the new 1394 specification that addresses these issues with a sophisticated, cost-effective, and secure solution.

IEEE1394: versatility, performance, security, flexibility

The advent of digital representations of all media types has fundamentally changed the way consumers use electronic products and blurred the distinction between computers and consumer electronics. Today, consumers demand products that interoperate whether a device lives in the office or the living room. Interoperability mandates a versatile interconnect. Too often, consumers must rely on multiple links – a situation that’s inconvenient, often offers sub-par performance, and hampers the user experience. IEEE 1394 (also known as FireWire™ (and the terms are used interchangeably throughout this document) remains the single best interconnect across the range of computer, data storage, consumer electronic, and service-provider supplied products in terms of performance and versatility. This paper provides a complete review of these features, including the results of recent benchmark tests and a heads-up about the future of 1394 and related products.

Simply POF: High-End Connectivity with Plastic Optical Fiber

Plastic Optic Fiber, or POF as it is widely known, offers affordable, high-end connectivity for office and home networks. With speeds of 250 Mbps (and Gigabit just around the corner), POF is a superior alternative to copper used in traditional networks. The 1394b high performance serial bus offers outstanding features to meet the demands of a multiple purpose network. Simply POF provides a complete review of these features and their implementation.
